Copper John’s Resort sits right along the White River, offering a peaceful basecamp for anglers, families, and anyone craving a quiet escape in the Ozarks Mountains. The area is beautiful, but it’s also rural—so having a few insider tips can make your stay easier and a lot more fun.

�� Laundry: Where to Wash Your Clothes

Copper John’s Resort offers comfortable, well maintained cabins, RVs, group lodging, and full-hookup RV sites designed for short-term and extended stays. The resort has great amenities including private shower houses, but there is not a laundromat on site. Our guests prefer to go to The Laundry Room in Gassville on Hwy 62. The Laundry Room is locally owned, clean, and attended at all times. You don’t even have to worry about getting coins. For your convenience, the washers and dryers are equipped with modern technology to pay with an app from your phone. The front-loader machines wash and dry large to extra-extra large loads quickly at a fraction of the cost you might expect to pay elsewhere. The staff is friendly, too. The best times to go are during the week as Saturdays tend to get busy. You can save money by picking up some detergent and fabric softener ahead of time at any of the many Dollar General stores in the area.

�� What to Pack for Your Stay

Weather in the Ozarks is usually considered fairly mild but it can change drastically in an instant, so pack with flexibility in mind:

• Layered clothing for cool mornings and warm afternoons

• Rain gear, especially if you’re fishing

• Comfortable hiking shoes

• Sunscreen and insect repellent

• A small first aid kit

• Bicylces

• Waders or water shoes if you plan to fish

• Binoculars for wildlife spotting

• A cooler for day trips or storing your catch

• An insulated coat, hat, gloves, and snow boots if you plan your stay during fall, winter, or early spring.

If you forget something, don’t worry—there is a Dollar General at nearly every major junction and plenty of shopping in Mountain Home.

Copper John’s vacation rentals are equipped with either kitchenettes or full kitchens, so you can save money by dining in. While Copper John’s feels tucked away, the resort is only minutes from several stores:

• Local convenience stores in Lakeview and Bull Shoals offer snacks, drinks, ice, gas, liquor, and basic supplies.

• Groceries – The nearest grocery store is Harps located just across the dam in Bull Shoals.

• Mountain Home (20 minutes away) hosts a Walmart Supercenter, Harps, Home Depot, Lowe’s, a whole foods market called the Truck Patch, Tractor Supply, countless restaurants and coffee shops, and much more.

• Propane – Scott Petroleum located at 6663 US-62 in Gassville will refill your propane tanks M-F between 8am and 4pm. For long-term RVers, they also rent larger tanks.

This makes it easy to grab ingredients for grilling at your cabin or stocking up for a week of fishing.

�� Mechanics & RV Mobile Repair

Traveling with an RV or older vehicle? You’re in good hands:

• Auto Repair – Lakeview Auto is the nearest full-service auto repair shop to Copper John’s Resort. The shop is conveniently located right on the main highway in Lakeview. Customers report that the mechanic is honest, thorough, reasonably priced, and fast. You may need to call ahead and make an appointment.

• Mobile RV repair services operate throughout Baxter County and can come directly to your site at Copper John’s—handy if you run into electrical, plumbing, or slide out issues. You can find these services online or ask any of the local fishing guides who they recommend. Survivor Mobile RV Repair has been well-spoken of by some of the resort’s long-term guests.

Because Copper John’s resort is easy to get to and popular with RVers, local repair pros are familiar with the area and respond quickly during peak seasons.

��️ Camping Supplies and RV or Marine Parts

If you need camping/fishing/hunting gear, RV or marine parts, or outdoor supplies:

• Mountain Home, Cotter, Gassville, and Bull Shoals have hardware stores, outdoor outfitters, RV & marine parts retailers. RV parts can be difficult to acquire at a reasonable price due to limited supply and high demand. Walmart Supercenter has the basics and Blue Compass RV might be able to get more specialized items. Guests may consider ordering parts online whenever possible.

• Many RV travelers also use local mobile repair techs who carry common replacement parts.

You’ll find everything from hoses and regulators to firewood and propane refills within a short drive.

�� Receiving Packages at the Resort

Copper John’s Resort does not receive packages or mail delivery for guests. Extended stay guests may use any of the following options:

• Provide detailed delivery instructions including a description of your RV or rental with the site number or cabin name and where you want the driver to leave your package if you are away. (Copper John’s Resort assumes absolutely no responsibility for lost, stolen, damaged, or undeliverable packages.)

• Use Amazon Locker or UPS Access Point locations in Mountain Home.

• It may be beneficial to rent a Post Office Box at the US Post Office in Lakeview if you plan to stay 3 months or longer. The Post Office has lockers for receiving packages 24 hours a day.

Rural delivery can be slower, so plan ahead if you need gear or supplies shipped during your stay.

Hiking for All Skill Levels

Northern Arkansas is known for its unsurpassable natural beauty and abundant wildlife, waterfalls, lush green forests, and breathtaking views from atop the Ozark Mountains. The Lakeview and Bull Shoals area is certainly not lacking in its presentation of the Natural State's reputation. Let's explore a few hiking trails easily accessible from Copper John's Resort.

James & Sally Moore Recreational Trail

The James and Sally Moore Recreational Trail twists and turns through Arkansas State University's gorgeous wooded campus in Mountain Home Arkansas and connects with the Mountain Home Greenway. This smooth, paved trail stretches for 3 miles and is perfect for strollers, wheelchairs, bicycles and more. The trail features a public frisbee golf course, an art walk with intriguing sculptures, beautiful brick buildings, and botanical gardens.

At Christmas time, the University hosts an elaborate display of lights along the trail with opportunities for storybook time in a sleigh, photos with nostalgic backdrops, and seasonal treats.

Need some refreshments after a long walk? Head across the street from the Art Walk trail to the remarkable Donald W. Reynolds Library. The library is complete with it's very own, appropriately named coffee shop, Bookworms. The library serves up plenty of fun for the whole family holding several events throughout the year to engage the community including an indoor putt-putt golf tournament sponsored by local businesses, Mother's Day events, Poker tournaments, bake sales, and more.

Directions: The trail head is located on campus at Arkansas State University in Mountain Home, AR.

Lakeside Trail

Lakeside Trail can be accessed from Bull Shoals-White River State Park. This park overlooks the lake and has a nice playground and picnic areas with restrooms and a pavilion visitors can reserve for gatherings. Lakeside Trail travels down rolling hills through the forest along the banks of Bulls Shoals Lake on the east side of the Bull Shoals Dam toward Lakeview. The entire trail boasts open views of the lake where hikers can take photos of the sunset and the dam from a exciting angles. The Lakeside Trail is considered an easy hike at only 1 mile in length and provides a place to sit and rest near the end.

Directions: From Copper John's Resort, turn left on River Road. Turn right at the stop sign onto Bull Shoals Park. Take another right at the yield sign onto Powerhouse Road and another right onto AR 178. To access the pavilion, picnic areas and playground, immediately turn left into the Bull-Shoals-White River State Park. To park closer to the trailhead, take the 2nd entrance to the park also on the left. The trailhead will be on the right as you turn onto the park's paved drive.

Dogwood Trail

Dogwood Trail in Lakeview is a hidden treasure, offering a rewarding surprise at its end for those willing to take on its rugged, three‑mile out‑and‑back journey. Winding over hills and weaving through the woods, the trail challenges hikers just enough to make the payoff feel truly earned.

Every step along Dogwood Trail rekindles the sense of wonder you felt as a child setting out on your first adventure. The path reveals sweeping views of Bull Shoals Lake, framed by dense treetops that filter the sunlight into a soft, dappled glow. At night, only the moonlight pierces the canopy, and the forest comes alive with active wildlife. For safety and the fullest enjoyment, plan your hike so you return to the campground before sunset.

Directions: To reach the trailhead, visitors first pass through the Army Corps of Engineers’ Recreation Area at Lakeview Park Campground—a convenient spot to pause and use the facilities before setting off. Upon entering the first campground which hosts the Marina, take the first right toward the swimming beach and boat launch area. When you reach the entrance to the second campground, turn right and drive up the hill away from the lake and around the edge of the campground. The trailhead is marked with a sign at the top of the hill on the right.

Gaston's Ozark Nature Trail & Wildlife Refuge

Guests of Copper John's Resort enjoy venturing down the road a little ways to Gaston's Ozark Nature Trail and Wildlife Refuge to visit the peacocks, turkeys, quail and pheasants before they hike a mildly rugged trail through the forest. Hikers should expect to come across a few unexpected sights in the woods that give them a glimpse of what farm life would have been like for earlier settlers. Though there is no climbing required, closed-toe shoes with a decent grip are best for this trail as sometimes the rocks move a bit under the feet on the steeper hills.

For a more leisurely stroll and photo opportunities, Gaston's Wildflower Garden Trail meanders through acres of seasonal wildflowers growing in meadows and along the banks of White River. The Wildflower Garden Trail offers walk-up access to the River and benches to rest upon.

Aviation enthusiasts appreciate being able to watch the Cessnas take off or land on Gaston's private landing strip as they stroll by from one trail to the other.

Helpful Hints: Neither of the trails at Gaston's are appropriate for strollers or wheelchairs and such due to uneven, gravel or grassy terrain. Bicycles are not permitted beyond the trailhead entrances. There are restrooms located adjacent to the gift shop and restaurant.

Directions: From Copper John's Resort, turn right onto River Road and follow it about 1.5 miles to Gaston's. The Nature Trail and Wildlife Refuge are located on the left side just before the paved road turns into a service road. You will see the peacocks, turkeys, and other birds.

To get to the Wildflower Garden Trail, turn right into Gaston's Resort and follow the drive all the way to the end. The trailhead is located just beyond the last set of cabins.

A World Class Fishing Experience ��

I came to Copper John's Resort in desperate need of rest and rejuvenation with a deep longing to reconnect with God, nature, and the person I used to be. Since childhood I had always loved camping in the forest on the water's edge.

Evenings at the resort brought my childhood memories back to life with pleasant campfire songs on the neighbor's ukulele and guitar, roasted marshmallows, and the solace of gazing up at the stars. I had found my home away from home, a refuge from all the demands and expectations of city life.

Early in the mornings, a cool mist blankets the quiet rhythms of the White River creating a palpable anticipation along the banks of Copper John's Resort with an invitation to adventure in the day ahead. I've heard that anglers come from all over the world year after year to fish for trout in these legendary waters. Every time I venture out on the river, I understand why. It's unspoiled and full of life!

From my paddle board, I was captivated by the calls of great blue heron, the sight of bald eagles soaring from the bluffs, and trout swimming gracefully through vivid patches of aquatic greenery. I had plenty to look forward to just taking pictures each day, but I had always wanted to try trout fishing so I referred to the Fishing Guide Directory on Copper John's website.

After a few phone calls, I decided to trust my first trout fishing adventure to Kyle from Catching Smiles and I'm so glad I did! He provided concierge level service even picking me up in a boat at the resort. The boat was in great condition, spacious and comfortable with plenty of room to accommodate a small group or a family with kids. My fishing guide was punctual and provided everything we needed for the trip. I didn't have to worry about anything except ordering a fishing license and trout permit, which is easily obtainable the same day through the AGFC website.

Kyle was also friendly and seemed to really enjoy making sure I had fun. He was patient and kind instructing me how to properly bait a hook, why it's important to use such a tiny hook when trout fishing so as not to harm the fish, and how to angle the pole and cast the line gently enticing the trout to take the bait. He knew just how to maneuver the boat up and down the river to get the best results. The guide taught me how to feel the difference between the tug of a trout and the tug of greenery or rocks. Reeling in my first brown trout made me feel so accomplished. Kyle helped me remove it from the hook taking extra care for the fish and releasing it back to freedom.

Something else that I've come to appreciate as I spend more time on the White River is the camaraderie among the fishing guides in the area. It's quite common for the guides to stop their boats for a little while so their patrons can visit and compare stories fostering a sense of community and possibly cultivating relationships that could last a lifetime. The fishing guides I've met here in the Twin Lakes area really love sharing the joys of fishing every chance they get. It's more than a job for them, it's a way of life. The hospitality here is warm and genuine.

Every time I come back to Copper John's I feel like I'm escaping to a hidden paradise.

It's captivating interior design resembles the inspirational architecture you might expect to experience only in quaint European villages or a Thomas Kinkade painting.

Immerse Yourself in Ozark Mountain Culture

Want to experience some genuine local culture and enjoy a few laughs while supporting kids in the local community? North Central Arkansas is home to several rodeo arenas for those of you who should've been cowboys (or cowgirls). One in particular, located at Bar None Cowboy Church in Midway, about 15-20 minutes down the road from Copper John's Resort, opens its gates to host a family-friendly Kids Rodeo once a month on Sunday afternoons.

Fun for the Whole Family Any Time of Year

Bar None's large indoor arena provides a spacious, temperature controlled setting and allows the rodeo to continue rain or shine. The arena has plenty of stadium seating and standing room for onlookers to hoot and holler as youngsters from preschool age all the way up to 18 years exercise their cowboy skills. Events include fun demonstrations from all skills levels such as goat tying, Mutton Bustin', Barrels, Poles, Breakaway Steer Roping, and a Goat Ribbon Pull.

Your young-ins are invited to participate too, if you want. They don't even need their own horse. The only requirement to participate is traditional cowboy/cowgirl attire and boots. The organizers even waive the registration fee for anyone who attends the church service at Bar None prior to the rodeo. Services begin at 9:00am and usually go until about 10:30 with sweet sounding old-fashioned blue-grass hymns.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Anyone age 16 and older must acquire a fishing license from the State of Arkansas to fish legally. You must also obtain a Trout Permit to catch and keep trout. It is the responsibility of the angler to secure his or her own license and necessary permits. Your fishing guide cannot do this for you.

How do I get a fishing license in Arkansas?

It's quick and easy to purchase a fishing license and trout permit in the state of Arkansas. Simply visit agfc.com/resources/licensing/ and click the "Buy a License or Permit" button. From there, you will need to select the "Fishing" tab and select which type of license applies to your situation. For example, if you are only planning to fish as a non-resident for the weekend, you could apply for the "Non-Resident 3 Day Trip Fishing License" and the "Non-Resident Trout Permit". Once you've been approved for a fishing license and trout permit, you can download it to your phone.

Arkansas residents 65 years of age and older may qualify for the "65 Plus Annual Fishing License". Arkansas residents with a "White River Border Lakes License" may also fish Norfork, Table Rock, and Bull Shoals Lakes in Missouri without a non-resident Missouri license.

What is fishing on the White River like throughout the year?

Due to Copper John's proximity to the Bull Shoals Dam, our clear waters maintain an abundant trout population throughout the year. While fishing for brown trout in the White River is restricted from November until January for spawning season, you can still catch rainbow trout, cutthroat, and brook trout. The dam opens up in two hour intervals throughout the day providing fresh water flow and optimal temperatures for fish to thrive all year. In the early to late morning hours, lower water levels are ideal for wade fishing. A common practice for anglers with boats and fishing guides is to rush up to the dam in the afternoons and evenings, floating back down stream, just to repeat the process again and again, catching trout as they go.

You can also fish for bass, catfish, crappie, striper, and walleye in Bull Shoals and Norfork lakes.
